New Orleans, Louisiana (Post 1 of 2) March 6, 2019

March 6th

Our travels today took us from Mississippi to NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, our fifth state on our maiden voyage in our new RV. We are staying for three days at the Pontchartrain Landing Marina and RV Park, just north of the downtown, with great access to all the local activities and incredible food. Oddly enough, the park has the appearance of being in Arizona with gravel roads, with each site lined with rocks and small palm trees. On the flip side, our site is on a marina, with some magnificent yachts right outside of our door. The glorious City of New Orleans steam boat is docked just down the street from our site. Today we are simply settling into this new location, but very ready to start our adventure in the New Orleans’ French Quarter and beyond tomorrow. Let the fun and experiences begin!!!!

Pontchartrain Landing RV Resort

Gautier & Biloxi, Mississippi (March 3 & 4, 2019)

March 3rd

Our travel destination for today is to Shepard State Park, located on the Mississippi Sound, just east of Biloxi in Gautier, Mississippi. The campground is absolutely beautiful and adjacent the Gulf of Mexico, in a forested area, with our private and spacious lot located right on a stunning bayou. We will remain here for three days and enjoy hiking the many state and national parks, sightseeing, cajun food, and enjoy the surrounding towns of Biloxi, Ocean City and Gulf Port. Life cannot be any better than this!!!!!!!

March 4th

Today was another great day, Anna and I hiked through beautiful Shepard State Park, located in southeast Mississippi in Gautier, just east of Biloxi. The park is situated within a heavily wooded forest, which is interspersed with impressive and gorgeous shallow water, grassy bayous, common to the general southern shoreline of the state on the Mississippi Sound/Gulf of Mexico. Although very cold today, we managed to make the very best of this day!!!!

Biloxi, MS

March 5th

Today after completing a few administrative items, Anna and I headed 35 minutes west on route 90, to the wonderful town of BILOXI, MISSISSIPPI. The town is on a peninsula that is surrounded by the Bay of Biloxi on the north side and the Mississippi Sound on the southern shore. The southeastern part of the city is lined with impressive casinos, and immediately adjacent to them, to the west, are miles of absolutely pristine white beaches. To our wonderful surprise, immediately upon our arrival in Biloxi, they were holding their biggest MARDI GRAS parade of the year. It included 105 party floats, playing awesome, upbeat music, crowded with people throwing beaded necklaces, and other trinkets, to the huge crowd that had assembled along the route. We had so much fun interacting with the local people during the parade, and collected tons of beads as mementos on our time in Biloxi. We also had an absolutely scrumptious local cuisine dinner at FILL-UP WITH BILLUPS. I had the crawfish etouffee over grits and Anna had the flavor burst meal of buffalo fried chicken with blue cheese over grits. Oh my goodness, our taste buds, hours later, are telling us to go back. Tomorrow we head to NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, our fifth state on this glorious trip!!!!

Mardi Gras Fun

Fairhope, Alabama (March 2, 2019)

There are days in your life that shape the way you think, in an amazingly positive way, relative to personal experiences and thought patterns you have learned in the past. Without question, the people that we have met and interacted with here in southern Alabama have been so wonderfully kindhearted and deeply genuine, it has absolutely warmed our hearts. We visited Fairhope, Alabama today, located on the magnificent Mobile Bay. The town which was discovered in 1519 and settled in 1702, is filled with rich history. It is stunningly beautiful, situated on bluffs high above the bay, with majestic live oak trees lining the streets. The architecture and preservation of the historic downtown area and upscale homes were magnificent, with every estate different than the next. As mentioned, the people are tremendously friendly, capturing and embracing the southern warmth and charm you hear about. Fairhope is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful and impressive places I have ever been. Put it on your bucket list, you will be happy you did!!!!!

Big Daddy’s Grill – Fairhope, Mississippi (March 1 – 2, 2019)

Big Daddy’s Grill respresented our first time using Boondocker’s Welcome, which is a website geared toward RV’rs traveling the US, looking for a free and unique place to stay. There are many private properties, restaurants, museums, and other unique venues that offer thier properties to travelers for a nominal yearly membership fee. We were blown away by the hospitality that Bid Daddy’s owner Jason, and his staff bestowed upon us. We had a fantastic view and it was a wonderful town to explore!

Weeks Reserve, Fairhope AL

March 3rd

Prior to embarking on our travel today, Anna and I visited beautiful Weeks Bay Reserve in Fairhope, Alabama to hike a few miles and view the magnificent reserve and its bayou. We thoroughly enjoyed the reserve, its animals and beautiful scenery, as well as the boardwalk system throughout the park and to the adjoining bayou.

Quincy, Florida (Oh My Goodness, Here We Go!!!!) February 28, 2019

QOh my goodness, here we go, full of emotions, anticipation and excitement!!!!! Today Anna and I begin the grandest adventure of our lives. We dedicated the last month to totally prepare ourselves and practice with our new 5th wheel for our new and highly anticipated RV life on the road. We also were able to see and say to our dearest family and friends “we love you and we will see you later”. While doing so, we camped in four different locations across Florida and Georgia for one week in each location, in anticipation for today, to embark on an eight month trip across the incredible and beautiful country of ours. We will follow the route 10 corridor across the southern United States, explore Utah and Colorado along the way, then head north up the western coastal states, and possibly into Canada as well. Our initial destination on this, the first leg of our glorious journey, is to Ingram’s Marina on beautiful Lake Talquin in Quincy, Florida, about half way across the state. We meet some of the nicest, helpful people here, and loved our brief overnight stay.

Preparing for our Journey – Phase 4

Kingsland/St. Mary’s, Georgia (Jan. 21 – 28, 2019)

The fourth and final leg of our month-long 5th wheel RV preparation trip is to the Jacksonville North-Kingsland, Georgia KOA campground in St. Mary’s, Georgia, just over the Florida/Georgia border. The campground is absolutely beautiful and is full of wonderful, relaxing activities. We are close to Jacksonville and as a result have had a wonderful visit with our parents so far, and will also see our son, Braedon, along with our parents again, tomorrow for a BBQ. We depart on our southwestern United States RV trip this Thursday, February 28th. We are very excited for this upcoming adventure!!!!!!

What a special time we have had with our son, Braedon, and our parents, family and friends over the last month as we have prepared to shove off on our southern and western United States adventure in our 5th wheel RV tomorrow morning. What an absolute wonderful shift in life we are taking TOGETHER to explore this incredible country and follow God’s will for our lives!!!!!!!! We love you all!!!!!!

Amelia Island Adventure 2/25/19

Today was one of those near perfect, relaxing and memorable days. I absolutely LOVE spending quality one-on-one time with my best friend and incredible wife, Anna Sick. We visited Amelia Island, Florida today and thoroughly enjoyed every second of the day. This is a gorgeous island, located at the northeastern tip of Florida, surrounded by the Cumberland Sound, Nassau Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. Over time the island has flown eight different flags since 1562, including the Spanish, French, British, Patriot, Scottish Green Cross, Mexican Revolutionary, Confederate and the U.S. flags. The island was home to its indigenous people, the Timicuan, who had inhabited the area since 11,000 B.C. We visited the amazing, historic downtown Fernandina Beach which has been brilliantly restored, preserving many cultures and generations of impressive historical buildings and structures. We then hiked six miles to and through the impressive Egans Creek Greenway Park, an ecosystem salt march and watershed, as we enjoyed its beautiful marshland beauty and wildlife. Our last stop on Amelia Island was at historical Fort Clinch, an impressively large shoreline fort, constructed in 1847, on the Cumberland Sound, at the mouth of the St Mary’s river. What a relaxing day filled with wonderful memories!!!!!

Preparing for our Journey – Phase 3

Melbourne, Florida (January 14 – 21, 2019)

The third week of four one week Florida camping trips to prepare for our new RV lifestyle was spent in Melbourne, Florida at wonderful Wickham Park. We visited with many friends and family members in the area. We also continued to further prepare our 5th wheel RV for full time living and for our cross country journey through the scenic southern United States and heading north into majestic California, Oregon and Washington. Today, our last day in the area, we visited Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands in Viera, an absolutely beautiful wetland, wildlife sanctuary with a vast variety of bird species and an abundance of alligators and turtles. We hiked 4 miles or so and enjoyed every second of our time at this gorgeous wetland preserve and sanctuary!!!!

Preparing for our Journey – Phase 2

Sorrento, Florida (January 7 – 14, 2019)

The second leg of our RV journey was to set up camp just north of Orlando, in the Wekiva Falls RV Resort, to provide us time to see our kids and granddaughter before heading out west to experience the beauty of the southern and western United States. The RV resort was incredibly well adorned with activities and amenities beyond most camping facilities, including hiking, canoes/kayaks, pool, beach, tiki hut, pickle ball, shuffleboard, gym, dog park, kids play structures, etc. The complex was centered around a riverhead, with an impressive giant waterfall structure located in the middle, which flows as a direct result of the gushing natural spring below the structure. What a busy but super blessed time we had. There is nothing that makes us happier, or that is more precious than family!!!!!!!!!!

Our Maiden Voyage -OMG…we are actually doing this!

Early Thursday morning, January 31, 2019, after a tremendous amount of planning and preparation, we loaded up our Dodge Ram 3500, lovingly referred to as “the Beast”, with all of our belongings, or at least most of them (we do still have a 10 x 20 storage unit in Melbourne, Florida). We had her so loaded up there was not even an inch of room left in the bed or the cab. We joked a bit that we looked like a modern day version of the Beverly Hillbillies. Having secured the load as thoroughly as possible, we set off for the RV dealership in Ocala to pick up our new home.

On a side note, I had been searching for weeks for an affordable portable camping grill and finally found one on Facebook Marketplace the night before, so we planned to stop along the way to Ocala and pick it up. Once on the road, there was a palpable feeling of excitement, as well as a little bit of nervousness in the air. Bill had never towed a fifth-wheel before, and we didn’t even really know how to hook it up to the hitch. Sure, we had watched several YouTube videos, but it looked pretty complicated, and who knew if all hitches are created equal. We stopped to pick up the grill from a lovely couple just outside of Ocala who had sold their RV and moved into a more permanent mobile home. We ended up staying there quite a while because they were from Michigan and Bill and the husband were sharing camping stories. Somehow we managed to fit the grill into our mountain of belongings strapped to the back of the Beast and got on the road again.

Once at the RV dealership, things started to get real. We went through a very condensed training session on how to work all the pieces and parts of the unit. Bill and I were trying very hard to take it all in, and took copious notes, but even so by the time we left the dealership we felt more than a bit overwhelmed and anxious to get going.

Getting the RV hooked up to the Beast safely was our main concern and we had to wait for the technician to assist us as he was working with another couple. I can tell you that at this point I was really starting to get nervous about hauling this thing. Who in their right mind allows someone to drive away from their lot with their home attached having never done it before! Well, somehow we got the RV attached to the truck, and it was time to pull away. I was so nervous at this point that I refused to get in the truck. Yes, I realize that is a bit childish, however, who is to judge one’s coping mechanisms.

Bill managed to maneuver the ensemble through a very small space filled with other RV’s, trucks, and random people crossing the road, so once a clear exit path was defined, I climbed aboard.

As soon as we turned the corner out of the dealership, we heard a loud screeching sound. I screamed “STOP!!! What is that noise”? Maybe we should have them look at it before we go”. Bill said “I’m not sure, but I think it’s just the hitch rubbing on the pin, let’s just keep going”. Something to keep in mind if you are ever in a similar nerve wracking situation, and your husband is equally nervous and driving, screaming loudly and clutching the door handle doesn’t really help matters. We started off down the road following our new Co-pilot GPS, which is supposed to keep us safe from areas that our RV should not be driven, only to find out that it wanted us to take an immediate U-turn, which somehow Bill successfully maneuvered after mumbling some things under his breath. We gingerly made our way to our first campsite at the KOA in Ocala/Ft. McCoy, Florida. The staff there was kind enough to show us around and let us pick out our spot. They even helped Bill back the RV into our spot, after I jumped out and decided it would be best to watch from the sidelines. Once in our spot and unhooked from the Beast (which proved a bit more difficult than we thought due to our inexperience) we were ready to start our new adventure!

Our first three days in Ocala were a real blur. The first day, we basically saw the inside of our RV and the shower room, but none of the campground.  We spent most of the first day unloading the Beast and finding a place in our new home for all of our belongings. I had to perform a pretty in-depth cleaning on our home as the RV dealerships version of “detailing” consisted of throwing a bucket of bleach water in the shower and then trampling all over our floors with their muddy boots. By evening time, we were completely exhausted, but still had to go into town for supplies. Bill decided to go while I continued cleaning. After about an hour and a half or so I started to get concerned because he still wasn’t home and it was almost completely dark. I texted him with no response. Just as I was starting to get anxious and was considering the options, he calls. “Hi babe, I have no cell service and I’ve been trying to call you. I don’t know where I am and I just hit something……” His phone went dead, no service, no Bill. “What???? You hit something??” If you are a husband reading this post….please don’t EVER call your wife and say those words. Miraculously, he made it home and even brought home dinner which consisted of a package of half eaten fried chicken and some random convenience food items. We inspected the Beast for damage, but never did figure out what Bill ran over.

It wasn’t until about 11:00pm that night that we determined that our RV was not running on the 50AMP electric power from the shore line. It was very cold so we were running our propane furnace because the electric fireplace was not working at that time. Being too tired to figure out why, we went to bed only to be awoken very rudely at 6AM by a loud beeping noise reverberating throughout the RV. “What the heck is that?” Well, we were either dying of carbon monoxide poisoning, or we depleted our RV battery. The latter was the case, and we soon found out that the shore power outlet breaker needed to be turned off and then back on again for it to work. We also found out that the RV furnace uses a lot of propane, and we had managed to run out of propane overnight. No worries though because we cooked our breakfast on our new electric griddle outside. Newbie mistakes, but that’s what this was all about- learning and gaining experience.

On the third day we finally ventured out of our RV and went exploring. Who knew Ocala was so pretty?! We found a wonderful nature trail and took beautiful pictures. We also met a neighbor, Russ from Ohio, who just happened to be in the RV parts and service business, and was more than willing to come over and show us, in a much more relaxed environment, just how the RV systems work. We had so many questions it was almost embarrassing, but he was so gracious and ended up being a wealth of knowledge and expertise. He and his wife, Theresa, quickly became our new friends and we enjoyed our time together by the campfire, even with the ever present bears nearby!

Bill was able to make many repairs, upgrades and adjustments to the RV while we were there, with the help of our new friend, and I was able to get much more into a routine of daily living in our new RV “home”.

We will never forget our maiden trip because it was incredibly exciting, nerve wracking, and humbling all at the same time. We learned so much about our RV, but more importantly we learned that there are so many things that we don’t know that we should know. The social media site RVillage was a huge help in receiving answers to our ongoing questions. Additionally, our newfound friend at the KOA was so kind, and an invaluable wealth of knowledge, along with so many other friendly and helpful fellow campers. Bill and I worked together as a team, kept each other’s spirits up when things seemed really overwhelming, and took some time to enjoy God’s beautiful creation together.

Take-aways and things to remember:

  • RV living and maintenance is not the same as house living and maintenance (you don’t know what you don’t know).
  • Fellow RVer’s are incredibly engaging, friendly and helpful.
  • There is beauty everywhere you look. Taking the time to investigate your surroundings leads to incredible discoveries that you won’t see inside your house, and always helps to improve your attitude and hone your perspective.
  • Leaving your family and friends to go on a new adventure can be tough and helps define your priorities, which for us is God, family, and dear friends.
  • GPS is NOT always accurate no matter how much you spend.

Preparing for our Journey – Phase 1

Ocala, Florida (January 31 – 7, 2019)

Anna and I started our new traveling lifestyle 2 1/2 weeks ago, picking up our Surveyor 5th wheel RV in Ocala and traveling to our first of four campgrounds in Florida in order to stock and prove out our “new home”. Our first stop was in the rustic Ocala National Forest at the beautiful Oklawaha KOA in Ft McCoy, Florida. The scenery along the shoreline of Lake Oklawaha were stunning representing the true Florida. We were blessed to see so many wild animals during our time there, especially bears, deer, various birds and squirrels. What a beautiful place to enjoy on our maiden voyage and get ready for our life on the road!!!!

If you are looking for a wonderful nature day in Florida, consider traveling to Ocala and visiting the famous, nationally recognized landmark, SILVER SPRINGS STATE PARK. The park contains an absolutely beautiful natural environment boasting the largest “first magnitude” spring in the United States, the Mammoth Spring, producing over 500 million gallons of water PER DAY. The park itself sports 30 springs with 61 vents (openings for water flow). The mighty Mammoth Spring is the riverhead for the amazing Ocklawaha river and lake. The grounds and famous glass bottom boats provide spectacular views of the crystal clear spring water surrounded by rustic Florida. We enjoyed the rustic scenery, bold springs and surrounding nature tremendously.

Off we go!!!

We are Bill and Anna Sick. Full time RVr’s, Explorers, and Entrepreneurs

Our plan is to enjoy our semi-retirement while living a healthy, purpose filled life, all while traveling the Globe and having amazing adventures!!

Our journey began in May of 2018 when we were watching a sermon on television with our adult children, while visiting them for the weekend. The pastor had a great message and one that continues to resonate deeply with me today. I can’t remember every word of his sermon but I can tell you that it made a huge impression on how I looked at our lives.

In a nutshell he said that sometimes, we people, get caught up in what “we think” our lives are supposed to look like. We go to church, we go to the gym, we even serve in one or more areas of our church or community. (My husband was running two bible study groups). We go to work, we pay our bills, and we live life the way God intended….or maybe not?

The pastor went on to explain how we can be just 5 degrees off of God’s true plan for our lives, and still be living a “good life”, but not really fulfilling His purpose for us. Most people don’t even realize that they are “off” to this degree but sometimes it comes to us as a feeling of being “unfulfilled” even though we may be considered successful. It made me really think about what is important to me in this life and what is not.

The most important thing in my life is my relationship with God. Secondly, my relationship with my Husband. Most importantly, time with both.

I realized that in order for us to prioritize those things in life, we had to give up some other things that were “holding us back”. For me, that meant unburdening ourselves from a beautiful but expensive house, and figuring out a way to retire and not work full time for the next ten years! My husband was 60 years old at this time. I didn’t like the prospect of not being able to spend as much time as I wanted to with him until he was at least 70. Yes, that is how long it would have taken us to be able to retire fully, continue to maintain our beautiful home, and travel. Not that 70 is old these days, but why not start sooner if you can and it is something that you want to make a priority!

So, you might ask, what did you do?

Well, I went home that evening and reflected on the sermon that we had all watched. I prayed and asked God to show me what it would look like to make our lives reflect the priorities that we held dear.

The next evening, while sitting on the sofa and relaxing with my husband, I said “Honey, I think we should sell our house and travel”. Wow…yes that was out of the blue! Especially since just months before this I was having a conversation with a good friend about how I felt so tied down by all of our responsibilities and didn’t see full time retirement in our near future.  I became extremely upset about a comment she made to me during this conversation, she said that I should just sell my house and downsize since all of the kids were now going to be out of the house. Our youngest son, Braedon, was turning 18 in June and moving to Jacksonville. A good 2 ½ hours from home. I literally had a physical reaction to this comment! How could she possibly suggest such a thing! We had moved in our home almost 2 years before and had renovated the entire house (mostly all ourselves) only to have a massive flood 4 months after almost finishing our renovation which resulted in us having to move out for the next 3 months, and then we renovated it again! We had made this house our beautiful home that we were incredibly proud of! We worked SO hard for this house! Why would I sell it??  Was she crazy?????

I can’t begin to tell you the difference in how I felt after hearing that sermon, and praying about what it all meant. I actually felt no physical tie to the house anymore. Suddenly it just became an object that was the source of stress. Stress because we had bills from the renovation we were still paying for, stress because it is a house, and let’s face it, a money pit! Stress because it meant that if we stayed in it we would have to work for another 7-10 years to retire. Back to my husband whom was sitting on the couch with me, dumbfounded that I would suggest such a thing. (It is not unusual for me to suggest “crazy” ideas, so he is always willing to listen. Remind me to tell you about the time I told him that God had instructed me to quit my job so I could focus on building my own business….which is very successful now. He simply said “explain”.

I shared with him everything I just shared with you and he said “I will need to give this some thought, and pray on it.” By the next day I had become so excited about the prospect of selling our house I called our good friend, a realtor, and asked her if she thought our house would sell for a fair price. She said “Oh my goodness yes! Have you seen what your house is worth since you bought it?” Well, no, duh, I wasn’t going to sell my house, remember? Turns out it was worth a LOT more that what we owed.

By the following day, I had put together a brilliant (or so I thought) plan of how we would sell the house, pay off most, if not all, of our debt, and travel the world! Okay, I still had to convince my husband. Turns out though it didn’t take a lot of convincing. The numbers really spoke for themselves and with my husband having a brilliant financial mind, he had already begun to put together a massive detailed spreadsheet encompassing ALL of our current expenses and another one detailing what our expenses would look like if we sold the house and traveled.

Very soon, and I mean 3 days after I spoke to my husband about all of this, our home was officially on the market!

I set out making detailed plans for places we would go and who we would visit, and where we would stay. This was fun but exhausting. Our house sold very quickly, and we sold 90% of all of our household belongings, and my Honda CRV on Craig’s List, and Face Book Marketplace. (I highly recommend that if you take this route that you don’t try to do it all at once….seriously stressful!)

Our home sold to a lovely Christian couple (This was definitely with God’s help) who are thoroughly enjoying it still! With our car and belongings purged, and the rest stored neatly (or not so neatly) in a 10 x 20 climate controlled storage unit, we were ready for our Adventure!

We started out by driving to Michigan to spend a month near my husband’s parents, whom we didn’t get to see very often. Turns out we had a fantastic summer and spent great quality time with them which we will never forget. We stopped along the way to Michigan and visited with many family and friends that we did not get to see often enough. The whole trip up North took 10 days and it was a wonderful adventure. And it taught us that we could indeed live in very small spaces together!

We did look at some (a lot) RV’s while we were in Michigan, because we had formulated a plan to sell my husbands prized Nissan Maxima (she is a beauty) and purchase an RV, possibly a fifth-wheel and a truck big enough to pull it. We had pretty much decided that we were going to become full time RV’rs (at least for a year or two) by this point. We really had no idea what exact RV or truck, just that we wanted to be free and able to travel the U.S. There were SO many options, it was decidedly overwhelming!

In September we took a trip to Costa Rica (my husband’s all-time favorite vacation spot) for 2 months after returning from Michigan. We had already made these reservations before leaving home, knowing that we needed a vacation after so much activity. We wanted to immerse ourselves in the culture and learn the language as much as possible.  We had the best two months a person could ask for and even got to share it with some family members and friends that visited us there. We hiked to the top of volcanoes, we jet skied in the Pacific Ocean, we explored beaches, and caves and hiked in Rain Forests. We got up close and personal with some very adorable Capuchin monkeys. We even had a close encounter with a Coyote! Look for our blog on our Costa Rica adventure for awesome, breathtaking pictures!

We returned home in November and have been staying in an adorable rented Airbnb (yes this was paid for before we ever left on our Michigan trip because we live in Florida and if you want to stay here during the winter season, you had better book early!). We have spent the last month enjoying the Holiday’s with our family and friends. We have purchased our fifth-wheel, a 32 foot 2016 Forest River Surveyor and our truck, whom I lovingly refer to as “the beast”. She is a 2015 Dodge Ram 3500 Long Bed with a 6.4 liter Hemi which can pull just about anything. She also came already adorned with a fifth-wheel hitch installed, which was a huge bonus! We have our car for sale and are praying that it sells quickly, as our plans are to leave March 1 to head out West across the Southern United States and into California, Washington, Oregon, and maybe even into Canada and Alaska during next summer. God is good and has been with us every step of this journey so I have faith that it will sell soon.

We will pick up our RV from the dealer in Ocala on the last day of our lease, January 31st.The dealer was nice enough to store it for us for free, since we didn’t have a truck yet, and have no place to park it. I have already booked us 4 campsites in February in Florida (strategically next to our family and friends so we can say goodbye). This will give us “newbies” some practice with our rig before heading out
